Three FloGrappling analysts tried our hands at predicting how the brackets will be drawn, including the unpredictable 77kg division. Take a look at our best guesses below.
Corey Stockton
Without a doubt, this was the most challenging ADCC bracket prediction to build. 77kg contains three pairs of teammates, two former champions, and four more ADCC medalists, making the seeding and pairing process messy.
With 2022 champion Kade Ruotolo out of the mix, I'll imagine that the no.1 seed goes to returning silver medalist Mica Galvão. I'm giving 2022 bronze medalist Dante Leon the no.2 seed. Dante's position locks his teammate Max Hanson in as the no.10, as they have to meet no later than the quarterfinal.
For the no.3, I decided on two-time ADCC champ JT Torres, although I could also see it going to 2022 fourth place winner PJ Barch, who defeated him in the 2022 quarterfinals.
No.4 goes to multiple time medalist Vagner Rocha, with no.5 going to Barch.
Here'e where things get tricky.
The no.6 is going to 2019 medalist Garry Tonon, but I have him facing 2015 ADCC champ Davi Ramos in the first round). Tonon has to face his teammate, Oliver Taza, by the quarterfinal, so that locks Taza in at the 14, and pits him against Torres in the first round.
There's one more set of teammates in the bracket: Fabio Caloi and Luiz Paulo. The no.12 and no.13 seeds felt an appropriate landing spot for them, pitting Caloi against Rocha and Paulo against Barch.
Jonnatas Gracie did not win a trials, but has been on a sensational run in 2024. Therefore, I put him up at the no.7, with East Coast Trials winner Elijah Dorsey at the no.8. ADCC veteran Mateusz Szczeinski also gets a high seed as the no.9, and would face Dorsey in the first round.
I would have seeded ADCC vets Jeremy Skinner and Alexandre Robinho much higher than their no.16 and no.15 spots, but the teammate pairings got in the way, bumping them behind Hanson and Caloi.
Joe Gilpin
This is a tricky weight to seed! The returning silver medalist Mica Galvao seems like the likely one seed. Then it’s a question of do you favor JT Torres’s historical success or how he finished outside the top four in 2022. There’s an argument to put him down at no.4, behind PJ. I went ahead and still favored JT’s overall resume and gave him the two - with Dante and PJ then following as the no.3 and no.4 respectively. I don’t think there’s any way they aren’t the top-4 in some order.
After that, I think it’s Vagner at the five. He is moving down from another medalist performance in 2022 at -88kg and medaled at -77 twice before. This does set up a potential quarterfinal rematch with JT Torres but it’s been a few cycles since we saw that so I think it’s ok (and makes it even more interesting for the veterans).
Now it’s a question of former medalists Garry or Davi. Davi Ramos is a former champion but hasn’t medaled since that gold performance in 2015. Garry took bronze in 2019 and is always a top threat, but lost first round last ADCC and hasn’t been very active as a grappler. I went with the person who has medaled more recently and gave Garry the six.
There’s three teammate matchups that need to be accounted for; Garry at the no.6 moves Taza to the 14 and Dante at the no.3 moves Max Hanson to the 11. That is the complete quarterfinal, all New Wave and Adamas/PSF. There’s also Caloi and Paolo of Alliance - considering the bracket I think you need to have Caloi as the 16, and Luiz Paolo makes sense at the no.9.
For the eight seed, I went with the only other athlete available who has won a match at ADCC Worlds, Szczecinski. He’s a real threat in this bracket, and makes for an interesting matchup with Mica if he wins first round (remember Galvao’s injury to a straight ankle lock at Pans?).
The ten is Jonnatas for me, setting up a teammate matchup first round. Even if they aren’t technically considered teammates because they don’t train together, I think having Gracie as the ten makes sense and it’s a good first round match. Gracie has been on a real run lately and would have two relatively familiar faces in Ramos and Torres to make day two.
All that’s left is the 12, 13, and 15 for Robinho, Elijah, and Jeremy. At least part of this is setting up fun matchups when I give Elijah the 12, Robinho the 13, and Skinner (who scored a big upset at -66kg last ADCC) the 15.
Carlos Arthur Jr.
In this 77kg bracket, we have JT Torres as the no.1 seed, with his two ADCC gold medals, and for being as active as possible. He will probably face newcomer Max Hanson, who's replacing Isaque Bahiense.
Shortly after, Max's teammate, Dante Leon, has a spot in the first half of the bracket and will probably face the invited Fabio Caloi from Alliance. Next, my no./4 seed, Vagner Rocha, with three ADCC medals and a vast grappling curriculum, will face Elijah Dorsey, aiming for another big breakfast at his ADCC debut. PJ Barch closes this side of the bracket as an ADCC veteran, facing Brazil Trials winner Luiz Paulo.
On the other side of the bracket, I was torn between Mica and Davi. They're facing each other in BJJ Stars and are in totally different situations in their careers. Davi is a 2015 ADCC champion, and Mica earned a silver medal in 2022, so I put Mica as the no.2 seed, facing Mateus Szczecinski, another ADCC veteran. With Jonnatas Gracie in a matchup against Jeremy Skinner soon after in the bracket, we have Davi Ramos facing ADCC veteran Oliver Taza. The last match of the bracket features veteran Garry Tonon facing the always fired-up Alexandre "Robinho" Jesus.
