FloGrappling Analysts Predict How The ADCC -65kg Bracket Will Be Seeded
The countdown to the 2024 ADCC World Championships is coming to an end. We're just 38 days away from biggest event in grappling at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Aug. 17-18.

As the all star brackets fill up, we're beginning to anticipate which matches we may see, which athletes will be seeded where, and what the brackets may look like.

Three FloGrappling analysts tried our hands at predicting how the brackets will be drawn, starting with the stacked women's -65kg division. Take a look at our best guesses below.

Corey Stockton

It was a razor thin decision between Bia Mesquita and BSM for the no.1 seed. BSM took silver in the -60kg category in 2022, but Mesquita is the only athlete in this division who has won ADCC previously (2017 -60kg), so I gave her the bump to the top spot, putting BSM at no.2.

It was equally difficult to place the no.3 seed. Amanda Leve is an ADCC veteran, Helena Crevar won the most star-studded trials of the season. But I gave it to Ana Carolina Vieira, the ADCC veteran who submitted each of her four opponents at the South American Trials.

Crevar and Leve filled in at the no.4 and no.5, meaning I have them matching up first. I could foresee ADCC separating the two to get a more diverse matchup; but that's a gut instinct, only.

Aurelie Le Vern gets the six for winning Trials on her first try. Mo Black: the seven for a non-qualifying Trials win followed by a silver medal in the qualifying West Coast Trials, and Sula Lowenthal the no.8 with her win at the Asia & Oceania Trials.

Joe Gilpin

Queen Bia is the likely no.1 seed here, being a former champion and medalist. Brianna, the 2022 runner up, slots in well to the no.2 seed. Had she beaten Bia head to head in 2022 she would have an argument for the one, but she faced and defeated Bianca Basilio in the semifinals instead of Bia Mesquita, so she drops because of Bia’s former gold.

I made the call to move Helena all the way up to the third seed. She’s young, but she won the toughest Trials (North American) and has been very impressive under ADCC rules. She won’t have an easy path, but she deserves a high seed in this field. I wouldn’t be surprised if Ana Carolina is the three, but she fits in well to the four seed as well given her past accomplishments and all-subs run through Trials.

Aurelie is another Trials winner here; and I favored winning that Euro bracket over the invites of Mo Black and Amanda Leve - each of whom won East Coast Trials but lost at West Coast in the finals (Amanda up at +65). I gave Asian trials winner Sula the lowest seed, as she is the most untested in the division.

There’s no easy path here, but I thought it was appropriate to match Amanda and Helena round one. Even though they aren’t official teammates, they have both trained at New Wave and it would be a great test for both.

Carlos Arthur Jr.

ADCC champion Bia Mesquita comes as the top seed in the division. I have her against Gracie Barra's Sula-Mae Loewenthal.

Bia will have a solid first fight and, if she manages to avoid any unwelcome surprises while facing the Asia & Oceania Trials winner, she'll will be in for an interesting challenge in her next match. On one hand, we have John Danaher's prodigy Helena Crevar, an 17-year-old athlete who has consistently given black belts a very hard time in the tournaments she takes part. On the other, MMA competitor Amanda Leve joins the bracket and, like Bia herself, will be bringing the full might of the game she revamped to fight in the cages.

On the other side of the bracket, ADCC 2022 silver medalist Brianna Ste-Marie comes in hot from her gi season and will probably be up against Aurelie Le Vern, a French competitor who has been fighting well both with and without the kimono. Also in the bracket, Ana Carolina Vieira brings her many world titles on gi and no-gi to face Morgan Black, an ADCC veteran who showed her proficiency in the organization's ruleset and conquered her spot in the upcoming tournament by taking the gold at last year's East Coast Trials.
