Gordon Ryan, Pato, Gracie Lead Submission-Heavy WNO 24 | Full Recap
Gordon Ryan, Diego Pato, Victor Hugo, Declan Moody, Jozef Chen & Ally Wolski picked up submission victories. Pato, Gordon & Jonnatas Gracie won WNO titles.
In his first competitive match in 263 days, Gordon Ryan returned to the WNO mats to submit Australian ADCC Trials winner Josh Saunders via outside heel hook in the main event in Austin, TX.
Ryan defeated Saunders slightly past the halfway mark of the scheduled 15-minute match, scoring the tap at 8 minutes 33 seconds of the bout. Ryan nearly finished the match in the opening seconds, locking up a heel hook after pulling guard at the start, but Saunders got away.
Ryan showed some of his guard game and his passing, but did not hold dominant position for long, and instead, slipped back into a leg entanglement where he put an end to the match.
This marked the first scheduled 15-minute bout in Ryan's WNO tenure. The rest of his nine WNO matches have been scheduled for 30 minutes or more; but each of them has ended in submission. The heel hook victory at WNO 24 is the quickest victory of his WNO career.
Diego Pato submits Fabricio Andrey to retain featherweight title
Diego Pato remains a two division WNO champion with a submission victory in his first featherweight title defense, taking out Fabricio Andrey with a rear naked choke after suffering some early pressure.
Pato took Andrey's back ten minutes into the bout, and locked the choke in two minutes later. Before Pato's late flurry, Andrey had several impressive chances, passing Pato's resilient guard, though he couldn't mount sufficient offense from a dominant position.
Pato is now on a three-win streak at WNO. He defeated Diogo Reis to win the featherweight title, submitted Dante Leon to win the lightweight title, then submitted Andrey to retain the featherweight belt.
Jonnatas Gracie poured the pressure on to defeat Jacob Couch for middleweight belt
Atos representative Jonnatas Gracie is now the WNO middleweight champion, picking up the vacant belt after defeating Jacob Couch with a steady stream of passing pressure.
Gracie, now 2-0 on WNO, forced halfguard near the halfway point of the match, and built top pressure through that position. In the closing minutes, he secured mount and began to stretch Couch out from that position.
Tainan Dalpra defeats Jacob Rodriguez in back and forth match
AOJ's Tainan Dalpra is now 3-0 on WNO, overcoming his biggest test to date in Jacob Rodriguez. Rodriguez put Dalpra to the test, scoring an quick takedown early, and moving well from the top. Rodriguez passed Dalpra to mount in the first half of the match.
But when Dalpra escaped, he surged, sweeping to top then taking the back, where he rode out the end of the match.
