When more than 100 of the top grapplers in the world land in Las Vegas for the 2024 edition of the ADCC World Championship, there will be nearly three dozen women among them, ready to compete in a nearly unprecedented four weight classes.

The event will take place at T-Mobile Arena on Aug. 17-18.

The 2022 event was held at the nearby Thomas & Mack Center and attracted more than 10,000 spectators. Expectations are high for the new venue and bigger field in 2024.

The 2024 ADCC World Championship will include five men’s weight classes (-65.9kg, -76.9kg, -87.9kg, -98.9kg, +99kg) and four for the women (-55kg, -65kg, +65kg, Absolute).

This will be the first time since 2007 the women’s division will have more than two weight classes. The Absolute division was a late add for 2024, and the announcement was made at the end of April.

The ADCC World Championship first was held in 1998 and then every other year, starting in 2001, though the 2021 event was delayed a year by COVID-19. This year’s ADCC World Championship is the 15th edition.

Before the action gets underway in Las Vegas, FloGrappling will be reviewing all of the winners in each weight class over the years. Next up, the women’s -55kg (-121.25lbs):

Who Is Scheduled To Compete This Year In The Women’s -55KG Weight Class

For the first time since 2007, the women’s division at the ADCC World Championship will have more than two weight classes. Even more exciting, a late-April announcement of the return of the Absolute division in 2024 means the number of weight classes will jump from two to four.

Since 2007, competition has been relegated to -60kg and +60kg, but the 2024 event will see fights at -55kg, -65kg, +65kg and Absolute. Each category will include eight participants.

Mayssa Bastos of Brazil and Australia’s Adele Fornarino, who both lost in the -60kg quarterfinals in 2022, will be back this year at -55kg to see if they can improve on their performances.

See who else is competing in 2024. Two spots have yet to be determined:

  • Margot Ciccarelli (European Trials winner) | Italy
  • Ana Rodrigues (South American Trials winner) | Brazil
  • Mackenzie Dern (invited) | Brazil
  • Mayssa Bastos (invited) | Brazil
  • Jasmine Rocha (West Coast Trials winner) | United States
  • Adele Fornarino (Asia & Oceania Trials winner) | Australia

What Is Abu Dhabi Combat Club?

Abu Dhabi Combat Club was created out of a passion for martial arts and the desire to grow the reach of martial arts in the United Arab Emirates. It all was put into motion by Sheik Tahnoon Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, whose father Sheik Zayed is a former leader of the UAE.

With the help of world-class instructors from a variety of disciplines, ADCC took shape, initially giving the people of Abu Dhabi another option for a healthy lifestyle and direction in nutrition and learning about self-defense.

What Is The ADCC World Championship?

The second part of the vision was the creation of the ADCC World Submission Fighting Championship, and the event debut in Abu Dhabi in 1998 with 16 elite competitors. It now is held every other year and is described as the most prestigious event of its kind in the world.

The ADCC World Championship is open to fighters of all grappling styles, though Brazilian jiu-jitsu continues to be the dominant style.

From the beginning, the event featured six weight classes – 66kg, 77kg, 88kg, 99kg, +99kg and Absolute.

Women’s categories were added to the mix in 2005 (60kg, +60kg, Absolute), and that was expanded briefly to five classifications in 2007 (-55kg, -60kg, -67kg, +67kg, Absolute).

From 2009-2022 (the 2021 event was pushed back due to COVID-19), the women’s division featured just two weight classes (-60kg, +60kg), but that will be expanded again in 2024 (-55kg, -65kg, +65kg, Absolute).

In 2024, the men’s divisions will feature 16 competitors – eight qualifiers, seven invitees and the defending champion. The women’s categories will have eight fighters – four qualifiers and four invitees/returning medalists.
