Luiza Monteiro, a three-time IBJJF World Champion in the Adult Black Belt Lightweight class, announced at 35-years-old she was retiring at the 2024 IBJJF Worlds Championship on June 2 at The Walter Pyramid in Long Beach, Calif.

Monteiro won her third IBJJF Worlds title in the Lightweight division at the 2024 IBJJF World Champion announced that this would be her final title. 

During her retirement announcement she saluted eight-time IBJJF World Champion Leandro Lo, by holding up a shirt with his face on the front.

Monteiro goes out as one of the greatest female athletes in the sport of Jiu-Jitsu.

Who Was BJJ Legend Leandro Lo?

Lo was one of the greats in the sport of Jiu-Jitsu sport but died in 2022 after he won his last IBJJF World title. 

Leandro Lo had one of Brazilian jiu-jitsu's greatest careers, where he didn't just win every major gi tournament in the world - he did it multiple times. With eight world championships, eight Pan American championships, three Brazilian national championships, and two European championships, Leandro was an elite competitor who inspired thousands with his matches.

He was entered inducted into the IBJJF Hall of Fame in 2023.
