The IBJJF has released the brackets for the open class divisions at Worlds in Long Beach, CA, beginning tomorrow at 9:30am EST.
You can find the live MEN'S BRACKET HERE and the WOMEN'S BRACKET HERE.
Men's Open Class
The 1-seed will be Euro and Pan absolute champion Gutemberg Pereira, who is definitely a common pick to win it all. In his way in the quarterfinal could be Jansen Gomes or Anderson Kauan, both of which would be first time bouts.
Light-feather World Champion Meyram Maquine has entered and will have a tough path, facing another Fratres teammate first round before having to face larger opposition like 4-seed Gui Soares. Gui Soares will face the winner of first round's Roberto Jimenez vs Dory Aoun, which is a barn burner to open with.
Erich Munis, another common pick for the top spot coming in, will get the 2 seed and will have either Ricardo Evangelista or Nico Maglicic first round. His quarterfinal could run through Six Blades black belt and ADCC Trials champion Felipe Costa.
Women's Open Class
Gabi Pessanha is back to maintain her throne, and her path is now laid out for her fourth straight double gold at black belt Worlds. To get there, she will have a semifinal against either Maria Malyjasiak or Elizabeth Mitrovic.
On the other side of the bracket, things could get interesting when contenders Yara Soares and Amy Campo will be facing off. They both could pose a threat to Gabi in the finals (some of the only women we can say that about) which makes that bout critical if it happens.
The Open Weight Categories
IBJJF competitions feature open classes, sometimes called absolute divisions. These divisions, open to competitors in the blue, purple, brown and black belt ranks, allow athletes from different weight categories to compete together. The winner of this division is called the absolute champion.
