One of the biggest weeks of the jiu-jitsu schedule has arrived, and certainly the biggest of the IBJJF calendar, as the 2024 World Jiu-Jitsu IBJJF Championship begins on May 30 at the Walter Pyramid in Long Beach, Calif.  

Day 1 of IBJJF Worlds 2024 featured Adult Blue Belts, Brown Belts and Purple Belts. 

The first day ended with more than a dozen 2024 World Champions crowned. It also featured the first set of BJJ teams earning points. 

IBJJF Worlds is a four-day event and the fourth leg of the IBJJF Grand Slam that includes Euros, Pans and Brasileiro.

The Adult Black Belt stars like Mica Galvao and Gabi Pessanha won't begin competition until Saturday's early rounds and finals will be on Sunday, June 2. But Thursday's action includes some of the rising stars of the sport seeking world championships in their belt and IBJJF Weight Class.

Unity Jiu-Jitsu Scores Win At IBJJF Worlds 2024 With Emily Pakulski Taking Brown Lightweight

Unity Jiu-Jitsu tied LEAD BJJ in the early point lead with nine after Emily Pakulski beat Valentina Lodi of Art of Jiu Jitsu in the Adult Brown Light finals. 

Pakulski was one of the favorites to win the weight class.

Cassia Remesar Wins First Championship At IBJJF Worlds In Adult Brown Feather

Cassia Remesar of Lead BJJ won the Brown Belt Featherweight World Championship on May 30 becoming the first athlete to win a championship at the Walter Pyramid. She defeated Caroline Brunacio Vinhaes of GF Team in the final. 

Remesar was one of the athletes highlighted by Joe Gilpin in the weight class heading into Day 1.

The Open Weight Categories

IBJJF competitions feature open classes, sometimes called absolute divisions. These divisions, open to competitors in the blue, purple, brown and black belt ranks, allow athletes from different weight categories to compete together. The winner of this division is called the absolute champion.
