“Simple answer first is: it’s the best of the best.” said FloGrappling analyst Joe Gilpin, “Compete for the top prize, both financially and just in terms of glory in each of their respective weight classes.”

One of the best that is going to be there is the young superstar Mica Galvao as well as arguably the best female grappler of all-time, Gabi Pessanha.

How good is Gabi Pessanha to be considered one of the best grapplers of all time at the ripe age of 24? 

 “She is the most dominant athlete in our sport," Gilpin said. 

"She is on 122 match winning streak," he added. "She's won the last 13 majors winning both her weight class and the absolute.”

Mica Galvao Is On A Mission At IBJJF Worlds 2024

Mica Galvao is only 20 years-old and taking the BJJ world by storm. He can make a statement at the 2024 IBJJF World Championships.

 “So number one is going to be Mica Galvao," said Gilpin. "Galvao is a young superstar who won a world title ... but it has been stripped because of a bad testing result.”

"This is his first opportunity to come back and win a world title. He won the Brazilian nationals. He won the Pans. He won the European Championships. He's been incredibly dominant."

"And he is the A-1 superstar that people are going to care about coming into this event.”

There's So Much Action In All of These IBJJF Weight Classes at IBJJF Worlds  

Since there are nine weight classes that's a lot of matches. So the question is: What are some that people can't miss? 

Here's what Joe Gilpin is watching. 

“I would probably say featherweight," he said. "At featherweight you have athletes at 154 pounds. You just have the most dynamic athletes. You have different people winning every single year and you have a lot of former world champions in the mix.

“Medium heavyweight will be very interesting," he added. "It is in a state of flux a little bit. There's a lot of returning champions from last year's middleweight championship, which is the weight class below has decided to move up.”

Who Are The Potential Breakthrough Athletes At 2024 IBJJF World Championships? 

With all types of sporting events there is room for someone to have a breakout performance. The IBJJF World Championships are no different. 

“I think that the men's absolute is going to have somebody (new win)," Gilpin said. "No former absolute champions are entering the brackets so somebody is going to have to win that and I guess whoever wins that will be considered a breakout performance for them.”

Gilpin added: "We won't know officially what those names are. I do expect that my favorite for that would be Gutemberg Pereira of the Art of Jiu-Jitsu. I would think that he is the most likely candidate to win the absolute and whoever wins the absolute almost by definition will have had a breakout." 

The Fun Athletes To Watch At IBJJF Worlds 2024 

“I think Elijah Dorsey will be very fun to watch," Gilpin said. "I think that Rayron Gracie of the Gracie family, the famous Gracie family, will be very fun. Andy Murasaki will be very fun to watch. I think Jackson Nagai will be very fun, It's a long list.

The Best Stories To Follow At IBJJF Worlds 2024

For those who don't know what grand slams are, it's where the grapplers win all four of the main events: 

• Euros
• Pans
• Brasileiro
• Worlds

"I think the easiest stories to get people into is the talk of grand slams and who's going to be able to accomplish the grand slam?" Gilpin said. "That is Thalison Soares at Roosterweight, that's Kennedy at featherweight, Mica at middleweight. For the females it is Thalyta Lima, and Gabi Pessanha is still on track to do it.
