T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas has seen its share of concerts, shows, sporting events and more, and the versatile venue on the famed Las Vegas Strip now will welcome the 2024 edition of the ADCC World Championship, which will take place Aug. 17-18.

The 2022 event was held at the nearby Thomas & Mack Center and attracted more than 10,000 spectators. T-Mobile Arena can fit 20,000 fans for UFC and other boxing events, so there’s plenty of room for even more ADCC fans to turn out this year.

The 2024 ADCC World Championship will include more than 100 athletes across five men’s weight classes (-65.9kg, -76.9kg, -87.9kg, -98.9kg, +99kg) and three for the women (-55kg -65kg +65kg). It’s the first time since 2007 the women’s division will have more than two weight classes.

The competition first was held in 1998 and then every other year, starting in 2001, though the 2021 event was delayed a year by COVID-19. This year’s ADCC World Championship is the 15th edition.

Before this year’s action gets underway in Las Vegas, FloGrappling will be reviewing all of the winners in each weight class over the years. Next up, the men’s -77kg (-169.5 lbs):

Who Is Scheduled To Compete This Year In The Men’s -77KG Weight Class?

Of course, Kade Ruotolo of the United States was invited back to defend his title in the men’s -77kg weight class, but so were the fighters who finished second, third and fourth in 2022. That means a bullseye on the back of the defending champion and three very motivated athletes who came up just short last time out.

Ruotolo defeated Brazil’s Micael Galvao for the title. Dante Leon of Canada and PJ Barch of the United States finished third/fourth, both losing in the semifinals to Galvao and Ruotolo, respectively.

At the time of his win, Ruotolo was 19 years old, making him the youngest champion in ADCC World Championship history. Galvao was 18 at the 2022 event and aiming to become the record holder, too.

Ruotolo also added his name to the short list of competitors who have won a title with a 100% submission rate. He was the fifth in history to accomplish the feat, joining Alexandre Soca, Jean Jacques Machado, Marcelo Garcia and Roger Gracie.

What Is Abu Dhabi Combat Club?

Abu Dhabi Combat Club was created out of a passion for martial arts and the desire to grow the reach of martial arts in the United Arab Emirates. It all was put into motion by Sheik Tahnoon Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, whose father Sheik Zayed is a former leader of the UAE.

With the help of world-class instructors from a variety of disciplines, ADCC took shape, initially giving the people of Abu Dhabi another option for a healthy lifestyle and direction in nutrition and learning about self-defense.

What Is The ADCC World Submission Fighting Championship?

The second part of the vision was the creation of the ADCC World Submission Fighting Championship, and the event debut in Abu Dhabi in 1998 with 16 elite competitors. It now is held every other year and is described as the most prestigious event of its kind in the world.

The ADCC World Championship is open to fighters of all grappling styles, though Brazilian jiu-jitsu continues to be the dominant style.

From the beginning, the event featured six weight classes – 66kg, 77kg, 88kg, 99kg, +99kg and Absolute.

Women’s categories were added to the mix in 2005 (60kg, +60kg, Absolute), and that was expanded briefly to five classifications in 2007 (-55kg, -60kg, -67kg, +67kg, Absolute).

From 2009-2022 (the 2021 event was pushed back due to COVID-19), the women’s division featured just two weight classes (-60kg, +60kg), but that will be expanded again in 2024 (-55kg, -65kg, +65kg).

In 2024, the men’s divisions will feature 16 competitors – eight qualifiers, seven invitees and the defending champion. The women’s categories will have eight fighters – four qualifiers, three invitees and the defending champion.
