American black belt Shelby Murphey continued to make history during her rookie year when she took gold at the 2024 IBJJF Brasileiros Championships on April 28.

She defeated Giulia Guimarães Gregorut in the finals

Murphey already won gold at Euros and Pans and is one step closer to a IBJJF grand slam.

But the third leg of that possible IBJJF Grand Slam carries a lot of prestige. Murphey, of Costa Mesa, Calif., became just the fourth American Black Belt ever to win gold at Brasileiros, considered one of the toughest jiu-jitsu tournaments in the world. 

If Murphey is able to win in the Adult Black Belt Rooster weight class at IBJJF World Championships in late May, she will become just the second American to Grand Slam - the first since Rafael Lovato Jr, the first woman, and the first rookie black belt.
