Regarded as one of the toughest Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournaments in the world, The IBJJF Brazilian National championship rarely sees repeat victories from defending champions at the black belt level.

This year, six athletes have the chance to win back-to-back gold medals, returning off of gold medal performances in 2023. Several of them are multiple-time Brasileiro champions, and only one returning champion is not Brazilian.

The 2024 Brasileiro is scheduled for April 20-28 in Barueri, Brazil and marks the third IBJJF Grand Slam of the circuit. Last year at the 2023 IBJJF Brasileiro 10 Men's Champions and nine Women's Champions were named

Every Returning 2023 IBJJF Brasileiro Champion

Isaac Doederlein

A two-time Brasileiro champion (2019 & 2023) and 2022 IBJJF World champion, Isaac Doederlein is coming back to the CBJJ Campeonato Brasileiro de Jiu-Jitsu 2024 for a chance at a record gold medal. Doederlein is already tied with Rafael Lovato Jr. and Mackenzie Dern as the most winning non-Brazilian athlete at this tournament; those three are the only foreign athletes with two gold medals here.

In 2019, Doederlein battled through six fights and achieved a 66% submission rate en route to gold. During his second gold medal run, Doederlein again impressed with two submissions in four matches, keeping his CBJJ nationals record flawless at 10-0. Doederlein is one of nine non-Brazilian Brasileiro gold medalists in the adult black belt division.

Pedro Lucas Soares Ribeiro

With only two losses in his black belt career, Lucas returns with his eyes on a second Brasileiro gold medal. With two fellow medalists returning alongside him and a handful of new additions to this year's super-heavyweight bracket, Lucas stands to build on his legacy should he achieve a second title at the 2024 CBJJ Brasileiro.

Brenda Larissa Alves da Silva

Representing Alliance, Brenda Larissa returns hoping for her third CBJJ Brazilian Nationals title, previously winning at light-featherweight in 2022 and roosterweight last year. A two-time IBJJF World Championship finalist, Larissa will face steep competition at light-featherweight in multiple-time IBJJF World Mayssa Bastos, and multiple-time IBJJF Major champion Jessica Dantas.

Mayssa Caldas Pereira Bastos

One of the most decorated female Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu athletes of all time, Mayssa Bastos won her first Brasileiro gold medal as part of her IBJJF Grand Slam championship run in 2023. Dominating her first three fights, winning 11-0 and securing two submissions, Bastos narrowly defeated Adele Fornarino in the finals. With Brenda Larissa moving up to light featherweight, a potential showdown between reigning CBJJ champions is on the table.

Tamiris Fernanda da Silva

Hot off a bronze medal finish in the super-heavyweight division at the 2024 IBJJF Pan Championships, Tamiris returns to defend her gold medal in the heavyweight division at the 2024 Brasileiro. Joined in the division by 2023 IBJJF World champion Melissa Sticker Cueto, a win from either fighter is a significant momentum boost heading into the 2024 IBJJF World Championships.

Gabrieli Pessanha de Souza Marinho

Since 2022, Gabrieli Pessanha has been unstoppable, winning a double grand slam each year, with six World Championship titles to boot. On track for a third consecutive grand slam title, Pessanha appears as the clear favorite to win the super-heavyweight and open-class championships again this year at CBJJ Brazilian Nationals.
