Dorian Olivarez
The teenager from Texas put himself on the radar and among the best in the world off of a breakout performance at ADCC East Coast Trials, where he defeated ADCC veterans Gianni Grippo and Ethan Crelinsten. Dorian put on rapid pace in his outside passing game, showed off his impressive wrestling skill, and demonstrated an affinity for kimuras from top.
Earlier in the year, he became the youngest-ever Combat Jiu-Jitsu world champion. 2023 was the year for the 17-year old to make a statement: he has a bright future in grappling.
Jansen Gomes
2023 was not the Checkmat star's first successful year, but it was certainly the year in which he established himself among the best of the best. The semifinalist from FloGrappling's 2021 reality show, 'Who's Next,' won his first IBJJF major to start 2023, taking the trone at Euros.
He lost a close final at Pans to multi-time world champ Gustavo Batista, but he came back in a huge way at Worlds. There, he defeated both Tye Ruotolo and the previously-undefeated Tainan Dalpra to become world champion.
Later in the year, Gomes avenged his loss to Batista in a head to head match on BJJ Stars, setting up a future bout against Mica Galvao.
Jozef Chen
Those who have closely followed the B-Team in recent years have had their eyes on Jozef, the Tiwanese-South African now training in Austin, TX. In 2023, Jozef's popularity transcended the interest of mega fans, and overtook the grappling world. Chen went on a tremendous run at the 1st ADCC European Trials in 2023, knocking off division favorite after divsion favorite, including ADCC veterans Tommy Langaker and Oliver Taza.
He used dynamic wrestling, ravenous submission hunting, and a unique style of passing which has started to be replicated across jiu-jitsu.
He used that same style of passing to great effect at Quintet in Japan this year, where he showed his skill against additional top-level black belts.
Luke Griffith
New Wave brown belt Luke Griffith finished the 2023 season with an unbelievable record. He finished the season with 40 victories and just one loss. All 40 of those victories came via submission.
Those included a WNO win over Roosevelt Sousa, a run at the ADCC European Trials to punch his return ticket to ADCC, a double gold run at No-Gi Worlds to earn his second and third title. The South African had a reputation as a human backpack in 2022. In 2023 he showed an improvement across a vast range of skills, but also became recognized as one of the best back attackers in the business.
Helena Crevar
Helena Crevar has been knocking at the door for years, but 2023 was the year in which she gained popularity across jiu-jitsu.
Crevar started the year with a major move, leaving Las Vegas to join New Wave Jiu-Jitsu under John Danaher in Austin, TX. Despite an already formidable reputation for her precise closed guard, Crevar grew in bounds at New Wave, tearing through juvenile tournaments in the IBJJF while climbing the ranks at the professional level.
She made her WNO debut in 2023, a submission victory over Healy Dayan. she returned to WNO to defeat ADCC veteran Julia Maele. And she submitted her way into the final at the ADCC East Coast Trials, taking silver in the deep tournament at just 16-years old.
Elijah Dorsey
TLI's 'Big Breakfast,' Elijah Dorsey went from well kept secret to household name over night.
Dorsey was familiar to the most attentive to fans; he won Pans at brown belt in back to back years and took silver at brown belt Worlds in 2022. To start 2023, he earned an impressive victory over Marcio Andre at Euros.
But he struggled to put a real run together, in the gi, a format where he had been most competitive in the previous years.
It was a surprise to see him registered for ADCC Trials, as we had rarely seen him in no-gi competition. But that was not the largest surprise from Dorsey.
Big Breakfast scrapped through the tournament, winning seven matches in total. In the semifinals, he took out multiple-time ADCC veteran Oliver Taza. In the final, it was multiple-time ADCC veteran Nicky Ryan, who had been on a 100% submission spree en route to the final.
