Breaking Down The Rankings Changes After A Major WNO: We Have Two New #1's!

We have new no-gi rankings, and we explain the movement in each division here - including who is where after Tezos WNO 21, GrappleFest, Main Character Jiu-Jitsu, and more!

Divisions

Men's 145lbs

  • We have a new #1! At WNO 21 Diego Oliveira won by submission due to injury over former top ranked Baby Shark Diogo Reis and as such takes that spot. Diego did look good in the match and applied several deep leg locks, so in our mind there's no controversy to him rising up in the rankings. Baby Shark is still elite and his resume keeps him from dropping further than 2nd.
  • Owen Jones defeated Dominic Mejia by decision on the WNO undercard and moves up from 11th to 8th. Mejia drops back to 9th but still beat Krikorian at Trials so he stays above him. Between Trials, beating Williams, and now Mejia, Jones is slowly creeping up into the top end of the elite.

Men's 170lbs

  • We have a new #1! There was a lot of thought put into this. The situation as we see it is; Kade won ADCC in one of the most impressive performances in a while, including tapping Mica in the finals with a heel hook. Since then though, Mica has been the one taking on the top guys and winning in impressive fashion. Rankings are about what is happening now and with Ruotolo only having one match this year (against #9 Tommy Langaker) and Mica's continued high level of activity, we are making the call to switch their spots. If Kade gets back to a more active schedule of competition, he can retake that top spot.

Men's 185lbs

  • Ryan Aitken ran a crazy gauntlet at Main Character Jiu-Jitsu, winning the 185lb championship with wins over PJ Barch and Oliver Taza among others. Because of that, he debuts at 11, one spot over Oliver. Jaime Canuto also falls out of the rankings due to inactivity.

Men's 205lbs

  • There's no change at the top, #1 Marinho and #2 Bodoni both won their WNO matches and stay where they are. The change does come lower where William Tackett re-enters the rankings. William usually competes at 185 so we have had him in and out here before but has been going up to 205 more often consistently now with wins over Eoghan O'Flanaghan and Santeri Lillius in back to back weeks. That's enough to jump in at 11th, and Eoghan falls to 12th from his 7th spot.

Men's Heavyweight

  • Luke Griffith is 37-1 on the year with 37 submissions, which is a mind blowing season for anyone. With this win over the No-Gi Pan black belt champion Roosevelt, he is now in the top-10.

Women's 125lbs

  • Sophia Cassella beat Jasmine Rocha in a head to head matchup at MCJJ for their championship, by EBI OT. We are making the decision not to have Sophia jump Jasmine yet, despite the head to head victory, because of their comparative resumes and the low margin of victory (EBI escape time isn't as valuable for a ranking as a more dominant method of victory). Sophia, based on how well she has been doing, slots in well at the 12th spot but could climb quickly with just a few more strong performances. Jasmine does fall some, but her resume is so strong that she doesn't take a big hit.

Women's Heavyweight

  • Welcome back to the rankings Kendall Reusing. The ADCC veteran will be back in action again at IBJJF No-Gi Worlds, a return to being active in competition after an extended stay away because of a serious leg injury. Her existing body of work is enough to earn her the 5th spot, but with so much time out that is a little more precarious than those who have been active.

Men's Pound-For-Pound

  • What was really holding Mica back in the pound for pound was being behind Kade in the weight. We do our best not to have someone higher than another athlete in P4P than they are in their shared weight if we can avoid it, but that's now shifted so Mica takes a big step up. Once you consider his ADCC medal, WNO title, resume of wins including two over Dante, we think Mica has earned the #2 spot.
  • Pedro Marinho and Giancarlo Bodoni both climb, with Bodoni redebuting in the rankings at 15th. As the top 2 in their weight, they very well may be on a collision course for a rematch soon.

Women's Pound-For-Pound

  • Jasmine has a really strong body of work, in terms of wins over tough competition and placement at tough tournaments, so she still belongs in the top-15 but falls after taking a loss to Cassella.
