Izaak Michell Earns Spot At ADCC 2024 | ADCC Asia & Oceania Trials Recap
Izaak Michell, Kenta Iwamoto, Josh Saunders, Declan Moody and Ethan Thomas have earned spots at ADCC 2024 after big performances at the Trials in Singapore.
ADCC veteran and WNX reality show winner is set to return to ADCC in 2024 on the heels of a stellar performance at the 1st ADCC Asia & Oceania Trials in Singapore.
Michell tallied four submission wins on the way to the final, where he met ADCC veteran Roberto Dib Frias, winning 3-0. In the 2022 edition of the Trials, Dib Frias won the 88kg category while Michell bumped up to -99kg. He eventually bumped back down to 88kg, where he lost a first round decision in a war against Vagner Rocha, deemed the match of the event by ADCC officials.
For the third season running, Kenta Iwamoto is headed back to ADCC, winning the 77kg final against Rhys Allan. Iwamoto showed off a new evolution today, putting his passing game on display. In 2019, the first time he won trials, he was primarily a guard player. In 2022, he broke out his takedown skills as a means to get to the back. This time, he put it all together, paying special attention to his pressure passing, which put him ahead against a tough division. He won five matches with two submissions at Trials today.
Josh Saunders is set to return to ADCC on the heels of another impressive trials performance. In three matches, the 99+kg winner scored three submissions and piled up big takedowns along the way. Saunders had a similar run at the Asia & Oceania Trials in 2022, and went on to fall in the first round to Felipe Pena.
Ethan Thomas ran through a gauntlet today to win the 66kg division, earning his spot at ADCC 2024. Thomas hit a rear naked choke in the final, his third submission in six matches. In the semifinal, he took out his teammate, David Stoilescu.
Declan Moody is set to make his ADCC berth in 2024. Moody had three submission victories then defeated Anton Minenko on points in the -99kg final.
ADCC veteran Adele Fornarino won the -55kg division with three submissions in as many matches. She, and the rest of the female division winners, have not earned a official spot at ADCC from this event, as women only earn tickets in the second edition of each regional trials. However, she has put herself on the short list for invitations, both from this performance and her ADCC veteran status.
Wae Jung won two matches for gold at -65kg, and Hillary Loth had a single victory to win gold at 65+kg.
