ONE Fight Night 12 Results: Tonon Wins, Tammi Beats Tubby
At ONE Fighting Championships Fight Night 12, Garry Tonon beat Shamil Gasanov in MMA and Tammi Musumeci defeated Amanda Alequin in grappling
ADCC medalist and grappling superstar Garry Tonon won his return to ONE Fighting Championship with a submission victory over previously undefeated Shamil Gasanov in the second round. Tammi Musumeci beat Amanda "Tubby" Alequin in a closely contested grappling superfight on the ONE Fighting Championship stage.
Garry's fight began quickly with Gasanov securing a front headlock and landing a series of grounded legal knees before Garry was able to peek out and clinch and grind away the first round. In the second round, Shamil scored an early takedown and was able to get a rear body lock on Tonon, but Garry rolled into a kneebar where he finished the fight. Garry was the #2 ranked contender at featherweight (155lbs in ONE) coming into the match, and pushes his record to 8-1 in MMA, all nine coming exclusively in ONE.
Tammi and Tubby faced off in a ten minute superfight, Tammi scored early with a guillotine catch after Amanda shot in, and the two athletes engaged in a battle of leg entanglements and near backtakes for the majority of the contest. Several times Tammi was near crab ride style back takes, only for Amanda to invert her way out of danger. Ultimately, the judges favored Tammi's work and she was awarded the decision victory.
Tammi was coached on by her brother Mikey Musumeci, who is also one of ONE Fighting Championship's star athletes. Mikey announced during the event that he will have a grappling match against ONE's strawweight MMA champion Jarred Brooks. Brooks comes from a strong folkstyle wrestling base, and has transitioned since into MMA and grappling.
