The open class finals are set for the 2023 IBJJF World Championships, see how we got here and who has earned their shot at absolute glory.
The 2023 World Championship black belt divisions have kicked off, and the open class finals in the mens and womens divisions are set. After a morning of great action, Victor Hugo, Erich Munis, Gabriela Pessanha, and Ana Carolina Vieira have punched their way through to the finals.
The men's side saw semifinals pairings of Kaynan Duarte vs Victor Hugo and Erich Munis vs Paulo Henrique Merlin, with Victor and Erich emerging victorious. Gabriela Pessanha defeated Melissa Cueto in a back-and-forth exciting affair and Ana Carolina won out over Amy Campo in a close match on the opposite side.
Victor and Erich are both competing for their first absolute world championship at black belt, and Pessanha looks to win her third in a row in three black belt attempts. The absolute finals will be contested on Sunday, after the weight class divisions and finals, as the final two matches of the tournament.
