9 Subs In 9 Matches: Nascimento On Track For Grand Slam | IBJJF Pans Day 1
Eliza Nascimento had a perfect day at the 2023 IBJJF Pans, Eduardo Alves took double gold, plus more results from the blue belts & the teams race.
Eliza Nascimento added two more gold medals to her IBJJF 2023 Grand Slam campaign at Pans, securing double gold at the blue belt ranks with nine submissions in as many matches.
The Nova Uniao lightweight demonstrated a vast array of submission skills, securing a kimura, two cross collar chokes and two armbars to win her weight category, then stepped into the absolute division where she put her dangerous guard to work, securing a wrist lock and three more armbars.
Nascimento is now on track to earn a double grand slam. Earlier this year she took double gold at Euros, winning five of her seven matches via submission.
Alliance representative Eduardo Alves also conquered double gold at blue belt, keeping his Grand Slam campaign alive. The middleweight secured four submission victories in his first four bouts, and went on to win the final in a points victory. He earned three more points victories in the open class, securing double gold and adding to his team’s points haul.
Alves remains on track to earn a Grand Slam in 2023. He won middleweight gold at Euros before losing the absolute final to his teammate.
Alves’ 18-point day give his team 27 total points in the teams race, putting them in second behind Dream Art with 29.
Vitor Almeida, the Alliance roosterweight, also contributed nine points to their team total.
Dream Art’s narrow lead is in part due to the performances of “Bolinho” Joao Nascimento, who won the absolute division and came second in the openweight behind Alves; Joao Venancio, who took silver at middleweight behind Alves; Mateus Martins, who won the loaded lightweight division; and Jose Victor, the super heavyweight silver medalist.
Dream Art is also in second in the female teams race, due to gold medal performances of Sabrina Lourenço, and Any Karoline Oliveira, the light featherweight who took third in the absolute bracket.
Pedigo Submission Fighting earned a monster lead in the novice (white belt) teams race, earning 78 points to win the Novice title.
