Kenta Iwamoto tore through the  16-man, $2,000 Welterweight Championship bracket at SOGI Pro this weekend, submitting three of his four opponents, including two in regulation. Meanwhile, Chelsea Mapa was crowned the SOGI Women’s Bantamweight Champion with a submission in overtime. Twenty-four of the 33 matches resulted in a submission finish, with only nine bouts decided by ride time in EBI OT.  

Iwamoto stormed his way to the finals after defeating Christos Papadelos via injury and submitting Alvaro Tautiva and Andrew Kochel in the subsequent rounds. The 2x ADCC veteran representing B-Team caught both submissions, an armbar and triangle choke, in less than two-minutes. In the final, Iwamoto bested Andrew Solano of Essential Jiu-Jitsu, capturing a rear naked choke finish in overtime. Solano advanced to the finals following impressive submission victories over Eric Cruz, Nicholas Impkamp, and Dylan Garafolo. Now Welterweight Champion of SOGI, Iwamoto took home a $2,000 cash prize.

Both featured superfights of the night ended via leglock; Marissa Pacelli of UpTop Jiu-Jitsu secured the fastest finish of the night, a kneebar, in only 52 seconds. Pat Shahgoli, a hometown representative of 10th Planet Long Island, defeated Leo Dalla Martial Arts’ Will Bullock via outside heel hook submission. Shahgoli is a former SOGI absolute champion.

In the main event superfight, Chelsea Mapa of Bancho MMA defeated North Fork Grappling’s Kristen Falek for the Women’s Bantamweight Championship. After an aggressive back and forth fight during regulation, Mapa secured the triangle armbar finish in overtime to win the SOGI Bantamweight Title.

The two most prevalent submissions of SOGI: The Welterweights were armbars (6) and triangle chokes (4). Welterweight finalists Iwamoto and Solano accounted for a total of six submissions in seven bouts.
