1. Yuri Could Become First 3-Weight Champ

Yuri Simoes is one of the winningest athletes to ever step on the mats at ADCC. He’s captured the 88kg title (2015) and -99kg (2017), and has now thrown his name in the ring for the +99kg category.

However, the +99kg category certainly could be considered Simoes’s toughest challenge yet; joining him in the brackets are three other ADCC champions, including Roberto "Cyborg" Abreu, Orlando Sanchez, and 2017’s champ Marcus "Buchecha" Almeida.

Based on ADCC’s seeding, it’s unlikely that Yuri will meet any of those athletes prior to the semifinals, but there is little doubt they will be present in the later rounds of the tournament.

2. Cyborg Could Become First-Ever Double Absolute Champ

No one has ever gone through the absolute division twice at ADCC.

They've either won the absolute bracket and gone on to successfully conquer the absolute title in the subsequent ADCC's super fight title match, or lost the super fight and been unable to go through the absolute division a second time (very understandable, considering this would take three ADCC events to accomplish).

Cyborg is the only athlete present at this year's tournament who is in a position to pull off the feat; he's the 2013 absolute champion who challenged and lost to Andre Galvao in the 2015 absolute superfight.

This year's absolute bracket is certain to be stacked with talents like Marcus 'Buchecha' Almeida and Gordon Ryan, but it would be unwise to count out a legend like Cyborg.

3. Kennedy & Cobrinha Could Become First-Ever Father-Son ADCC Champions

Rubens "Cobrinha" Charles – the 2017 66kg champ – opted to vacate his position in this year’s tournament to open a space for his son Kennedy Maciel.

It should be noted just by the mere fact of Kennedy competing makes them the first-ever father-son duo to step on the mats at ADCC, but Kennedy stands a real shot at capturing the title, and should he do so, would make the pair the first-ever father-son ADCC champions.

4. Gabi Garcia Could Be the First Woman To Capture Four ADCC Titles

Marcelo Garcia is the only person to have won ADCC four times, but Alliance superstar Gabi Garcia is in great position to tie the record this weekend.

Garcia ran through the opposition in 2017, submitting two out of her three opponents, and all signs point to her having another successful campaign in 2019.

A first glance, the toughest challenge for Gabi seems to be ADCC newcomer and multiple-time gi world champ Tayane Porfirio — her former Alliance teammate before Tayane jumped sip to Gracie Barra – and the two seem to have an underlying grudge that could be settled inside of the ADCC arena.

5. Nicky & Gordon Ryan Could Become First Concurrent Fraternal ADCC Champions

Brothers Nicky and Gordon Ryan could be the first-ever set of brothers to win an ADCC title in the same year. The pair is competing in 66kg and -99kg, with Gordon being the sizeable favorite in his division.

Nicky is indeed a fan-favorite for 66kg, but it would absolutely be a stretch to call him a shoo-in for the top of the podium – he'll need to get past some exceptional competition with significantly more experience than him to pull it off.

And wait!

I hear you back there . . . yes, it's true that Saulo and Xande Ribeiro have both claimed gold medals at ADCC, but they didn't win them in the same year (both took home bronze in 2005, though).

6. Ana Carolina Vieira & Rodolfo Vieira Could Become First Brother-Sister Champs

Another pair of famous jiu-jitsu siblings could add yet another accolade to their storied carries – Rodolfo and Ana Carolina already share world titles in the gi, and should Ana Carolina defy the odds and take home gold this weekend, they'll be the only brother-sister duo to also earn ADCC gold.

Ana Carolina will have likely have to go through the most dominant woman in ADCC history, Gabi Garcia, to accomplish this goal.

7. Livia & Lachlan Giles To Become First-Ever Husband-Wife To Compete At ADCC

Another guaranteed first-ever from the list, Livia and Lachlan Giles will be the first married couple to compete at ADCC in the same event.
