The first major jiu-jitsu event of the year is upon us! The gi season always begins with the IBJJF European Championships, one of the most traditional and highly-regarded events on the calendar.
We’ve seen many legends made and stories written at Euros. From Cobrinha beginning his 2017 “Super Grand Slam”, to the epic match between Felipe Pena and Erberth Santos in 2016– there is never any shortage of drama and intrigue, and 2019 promises much of the same.
The IBJJF Europeans takes place in Lisbon, Portugal and draws competitors from all over the world. As you’d expect, there is much more of an international feel to this event than others, with over 70 countries represented in the thousands of athletes who sign up for for a chance to compete in the biggest IBJJF tournament outside of the Americas.
With names such as Lucas Lepri, Gianni Grippo, Claudio Calasans, Paulo and Joao Miyao, Lucas Barbosa, Marcio Andre, Isaque Bahiense, Espen Mathiesen, Jackson Sousa, Otavio Sousa, and many others, the men’s divisions are loaded with talent. World champions such as Claudia do Val, Luiza Monteiro, Ana Carolina Schmitt and Nathiely de Jesus are among the female black belts you can expect to see compete.
