The term “Super Grand Slam” was coined when featherweight legend Rubens ‘Cobrinha’ Charles unlocked the monumental achievement in 2017, which entailed winning gold at the four IBJJF majors (Europeans, Pans, Brazilian Nationals and Worlds) AND gold at ADCC.

The “Double Grand Slam” is winning gold in both weight and absolute at all four major IBJJF tournaments, which Tayane Porfirio achieved in 2017.

Now Gordon Ryan has said he is aiming for the “Super Double Grand Slam”, an as-yet unattempted feat which would mean combining both of the above: that is, double gold medals (winning the weight and absolute divisions) at all five tournaments.

But wait…  Gordon Ryan only does no-gi, right?

Not for much longer, he says: “I’m doing all the gi events next year,” says Gordon. “Unless I’m getting paid to do something else.”

“The gi is what I’m focused on right now. Just like I was doing all the EBIs and no-gi events, same for the gi now.”

It’s true that Gordon has been posting a lot of photos of himself in the gi, and he’s been seen sharpening his gi skills with the likes of Keenan Cornelius and Craig Jones.

This leaves only the question of when Gordon Ryan will make his gi debut.

“Soon– as long as I don’t get sick again,” he says. Ryan contracted staph twice in short succession, and he’s still feeling the effects.

“The bacteria from the MRSA is still killing me. It messed up my stomach so I’m just constantly nauseous. I was on antibiotics for two weeks but doctors think it burnt the lining of my stomach causing it to produce more acid than normal. So I always feel like I have to vomit everywhere. It sucks, but it is what it is.”

Fans can expect to see Gordon get in some tune-up comps in “the next couple of months for sure”.

“Hopefully I die and am remembered as ‘the grappler that could’ve’,” he says.
