Weekend Recap: Nalati Proves Size DOES Matter plus Mesquita Reigns in No-Gi

We're back! The weekend recap is your one-stop-shop for all your jiu-jitsu news, including IBJJF, EBI and much more.

The Biggest Man in Jiu-Jitsu Proves Size DOES Matter

The IBJJF held two tournaments this weekend. The biggest was in the Brazilian city of Belo Horizonte, home to Felipe Pena, Gabriel Arges, Romulo Barral and many other Gracie Barra standouts.

Double gold went one of– if not THE–  biggest man in jiu-jitsu: Otavio Nalati of Guigo JJ. The ultra-heavyweight black belt took gold in his weight class and the absolute, beating medium-heavyweight champion Servio Tulio (Gracie Barra) in the final.

Also worth a mention is the fact that Ygor Rodrigues, who got promoted to black belt just two weeks ago, won gold in the lightweight division. A promising start for this youngster from Rio de Janeiro.

More news:

• David "Skinny" Herrera (Soul Fighters), an American living in Brazil, took his first big gold medal at a black belt tournament by beating veteran Douglas Rufino in the light-featherweight final.

• Yan "Pica Pau" Lucas (Ribeiro Jiu-Jitsu) won middleweight gold. The Brazilian champ skipped on Worlds, but is maintaining his good form.

British Nationals

Few standout results from the British Nationals this weekend, at least in the black belt divisions which had a disappointingly low turnout.

Brown belt double gold went to super-heavyweight and absolute champion Dominque Bell (Atos) who took on featherweight(!) champion Jonas Andrade (PSLPB Cicero Costha) in the final. Andrade just got his brown after closing out Worlds at purple, and he's putting it to good use already. How long before Bell, brown belt bronze medalist at Worlds, gets his black belt?

European No-Gi Scene is dead?

Want to know something sad? As much as people claim no-gi jiu-jitsu to be the be-all and end-all of jiu-jitsu, two recent tournaments would seem to say otherwise.

ADCC and IBJJF both held no-gi tournaments in Europe, with ADCC hosting an open tournament in Rimini, Italy and IBJJF holding the No-GI British Nationals in London.

The ADCC split their open events into beginner, intermediate and pro. Their pro divisions featured a grand total of nine competitors. The IBJJF fared even worse, with only five competitors in the black belt divisions. Disappointing.

Mesquita wins EBI

Beatriz Mesquita showed why she's our no.3-ranked pound-for-pound female black belt with another dominant display, this time in no-gi.

2017 ADCC champion Mesquita cleaned up at EBI in the all-woman bantamweight tournament, beating Miri Niedrauer, Amanda Leve, Luanna Alzuguir and Bianca Basilio, finishing the first three via submission in regulation and beating Basilio by overtime submission.
