With so much jiu-jitsu over the weekend, there were a ton of results to wade through.
We mentioned on Friday how the IBJJF was hosting eight tournaments in four cities. Here are the most notable results from each event.
IBJJF Floripa Open: Renato Cardoso submits Erberth Santos
Erberth Santos has had a rough couple of months. Since he got submitted by Abdurakhman Bilarov in December, he’s lost a series of matches that he—in all other circumstances—should have won. There was Tommy Langaker’s weird not-quite-locked-on triangle at Euros, followed by a bizarre verbal tap when mounted by Adam Wardzinski.
The list of black belts in Brazil who can normally beat Erberth is pretty short but Santos found himself losing once again on Saturday, this time to Renato Cardoso of Alliance.
As you can see in the videos below, Cardoso locked on what looked to be a very basic armbar from guard. Cardoso had never beaten Santos, let alone submitted him. This really does now beg the question—what the hell is going on with Erberth Santos?
IBJJF Chicago Open
Here's a quick rundown of key results from Chicago.
• Pan absolute silver medalist Gutemberg Pereira took double gold by beating Jared Dopp in the super-heavyweight division (just one match) and then submitting Horlando Monteiro with a choke from the back in the final of the absolute division.
• Alliance-Marcelo Garcia teammates Marcos Tinoco and Gianni Grippo both took gold in their divisions, with Grippo beating Alexandre Molinaro in the lightweight final and Tinoco edging out GF Team's Dante Leon.
• GF Team up-and-comers Mauricio Oliveira and Henrique Nobrega closed out the brown belt absolute after winning the medium-heavyweight and heavyweight divisions respectively. Both are based in Toledo, Ohio.
