Weekend Recap: Surprises At Brazilian Nationals, Misfortune In Atlanta
Your indispensable guide to what went down last weekend in the world of jiu-jitsu. More than a few shock results occurred at the Brazilians Nationals — take a look below.

Erberth Subbed In Weight Class but Bounces Back To Win Absolute

Fresh from his triumphant performance in Abu Dhabi, Erberth Santos was submitted by the little-known teammate of Leandro Lo, Alex Aparecido of NS Brotherhood. Aparecido submitted Santos with a triangle and would go on to win the super heavyweight division at the IBJJF Brazilian Nationals. Santos came in third.

The decisive moment begins around 5.30, take a look at the below video:

It wasn’t all bad for Erberth though, as he still managed to take gold in the absolute division with a solid win over veteran grappler Rodrigo Cavaca, a founder of the Zenith team. Erberth scored a solid pass in the early part of the match, but the rest of the match played out in a disappointing 50-50 guard battle.

Mackenzie Dern Fails To Medal, Loses To Alliance’s Andresa Correa

Another favorite fell in Sao Paulo this weekend, when Mackenzie Dern lost to Andresa Correa in the final of the absolute division. Correa has beaten Dern twice this year in the gi, once in the finals of the European Championships and now at the Brazilian Nationals.

It seems the Alliance rep, who was submitted by Dern with a guillotine at No-Gi Worlds last November, has discovered a formula for success against the Gracie Humaita star.

Dern went home empty-handed as she did not compete in her weight class as she wished to focus on the absolute.

Bad Luck in Atlanta for Sa and Silverio

A very unfortunate accident happened on Saturday at the IBJJF Atlanta Pro. Thiago Sa of Checkmat was up against Vitor Oliveira of GF Team when the latter went for a takedown attempt. Sa posted his arm, and as we’ve seen so many times before, the results weren’t pretty.

Sa confirmed via his Facebook that he’s dislocated his elbow and will be out until further notice. That’s a shame for the middle heavyweight, who ia always one of the gamest competitors in the middle heavyweight division. We wish him a speedy recovery.

Victor Silverio of GF Team also had some bad luck when Spirit cancelled his flight to Atlanta forcing him to miss the tournament completely.
