Shock result in the first round of the Pans here in Irvine, California. The purple belt light featherweight division started with a bang when Jonata Gomes of Checkmat met Kennedy Maciel of Alliance in the opening round. 

The match went back and forth with both grapplers scoring reversal points. Gomes took victory in the last 20 seconds by scoring an advantage for a near-takedown, although the Alliance camp protested the call. 



Kennedy Maciel is known as Cobrinha Jr, and his famous father had this to say about the contest. 

“Of course I’m disappointed. Not just as a father, but as a coach,” says Rubens ‘Cobrinha’ Charles. “The referee just came to me to apologize, he said he made a mistake with the points, but you can’t blame him. I think this is the coward’s way. Kennedy should have done better to win.  

“With Kennedy I have to be honest,. If it was bad, I will tell him, that was bad. You didn’t train 6, 7 hours a day for this crap. If he does well I will give him positive words, but I can talk straight to him.”
