The Los Angeles leg of the Grand Slam tour saw titles divided between both veteran and up-and-coming competitors.
Though Roberto Cyborg would win the absolute division, Ricardo Evangelista dominated him in their first meeting in the +94kg (208lb) final, beating the ADCC 2013 champion 10-0.
Brazilian twins Joao and Paulo Miyao took the 62kg (136lb) and 69kg (152lb) titles respectively. Joao secured a choke in his match with Joao Somalia to take gold, earlier beating Rafael Freitas by 2-0 in the opening round. Paulo Miyao squeezed past Osvaldo ‘Queixinho’ Moizinho 6-4 before beating Sami Chantre 5-0 with a sweep and a guard pass.
Erberth Santos won his place in the 94kg (208lb) finals with a referee decision after a 2-2 draw against Jackson Sousa, beating Evandro Nunes 10-0 for gold.
In the 85kg (187lb) division Tanner Rice, one of our Top Black Belts Under 25, beat Lucas ‘Hulk’ Barbosa of ATOS on advantages for first place. Rice overcame Alec Baulding and Gregor Gracie to earn his spot in the finals.
The 77kg (169lb) division final ended in disappointing fashion when Brazilian-Japanese grappler Roberto Satoshi Souza dislocated his shoulder around one minute into his match with Celsinho Vinicius, giving the Sao Paulo resident the default win.
Mackenzie Dern continued her winning ways by taking gold in the 62kg (136lb) female black-brown combined division, edging past Checkmat’s Marina Ribeiro 2-0.
Tammy Griego of Gracie Barra beat GF Team brown belt Talita Alencar for absolute gold but lost out to Jessica Da Oliveira in the +70kg (154lb) final. Alencar managed two silvers, also medalling her weight category of 55kg (121lb).
