We caught up with multiple time IBJJF Black Belt World Champion Caio Terra in an interview where he discussed the preparation and expectation he has for his student Yuri Simoes for the 2015 ADCC:
Yuri Simoes had a good showing at the FIVE Grappling tournament, but ended up losing in the finals to Tim Spriggs. What is the takeaway from that tournament?
Yuri was more focused on ADCC, FIVE was just to prepare himself. Of course he wanted to win a lot but, he and I are really happy about his performance there. If he had won, he would have just won the matches by a little or playing it safe, we probably wouldn t be as happy. Even though he lost in the finals he was the guy who pushed the pace the whole time in all his matches. Both him and I are happy about that because it showed his Jiu-Jitsu is top level. After FIVE it was something that was really good because he was already training really hard for FIVE , but afterwards he started training even harder. I can t wait to see him at ADCC I think he is more than ready and is going to be showing a lot of new and cool stuff out there. He s going to surprise a lot of people. I can t wait.
He had some slick Arm Drags early in the tournament. Have takedowns become a focus for you guys?
No, Yuri is very good at takedowns. It wasn t one specific takedown. I think he only had a problem in the final with Tim Spriggs. Tim Spriggs was really smart and played super safe, waited for Yuri to attack, attack, attack and there was one part when Yuri fell in the middle of the mats, cause Yuri was actually the one trying for the takedown and Tim Spriggs fell on top. And it was more Yuri falling down than actually Tim. The place where Yuri fell was really slippery and that s why when he went to the arm drag he ended up falling down. And of course it was two points, I m not complaining about that. It was just out of luck but I m sure they will face each other again soon. We re gonna see another good match.
Will you be going to ADCC?
Yes. I m gonna go watch.
What are you expecting from Yuri Simoes at ADCC?
I'm expecting him to have fun, no matter what the outcome goes, I hope he fights his heart out with everything he has. Then he's never gonna regret going to ADCC. If he plays it safe and ends up winning or losing he might end up regretting later. We're focusing really hard for him to go as hard as he can and pushing the pace against everyone. What happens, happens. If it s suppose to be his, it will be his. I believe it will be, if he fights as hard as he trains he's gonna do it.
