Michael Pixley stunned the world on Aug. 17.

The biggest upset of the 2024 ADCC World Championships came in the -99KG weight class as the No. 4-ranked pound-for-pound no-gi grappler in the world, Nicholas Meregali, was submitted by Pixley in the quarterfinals.

Meregali, who was attempting to double gold at ADCC, was caught in an armbar by Pixley.

"Michael Pixley was an elite high school wrestler who didn’t have a D1 wrestling career," FloWrestling editor David Bray said. "It might seem surprising that Pixley just took out a legend in Meregali, but Pixley has been a killer for years!"

A former NAIA college wrestling champion, Pixley grapples out of Pedigo Submission Fighting gym.

"For a purple belt training out of a garage in Mount Vernon to submit a legendary grappling force like Meregali, it takes a historic effort meeting the perfect opportunity," said FloGrappling writer Joe Gilpin. "Today, a lifetime of work met that moment when Michael Pixley shocked the world. Tomorrow, he will try to accomplish his dream of becoming ADCC Champion but no matter what happens Michael has secured his legacy with a moment that will stand the test of time as an inspiration to all of us about what can be when we dedicate everything."

Every  match at ADCC is streaming live on FloGrappling and the FloSports app.
