Bernardo Faria Too Humble? Smashes Opponents But Won't Admit He's World #1
2016 IBJJF Pan openweight champion Bernardo Faria says five submissions in five matches could mean that his performance makes this his best tournament to date.
Faria, who competed only in the openweight class and decided not to compete in the super heavyweight class as he was carrying a rib injury, submitted Leandro Lo, Tim Spriggs, Gabriel Arges, Victor Silverio and Ezra Lennon en route to winning Absolute gold.
About his match with Leandro, who Faria submitted twice last year, he had this to say: "Every time I fight him I humble myself, I tell myself there's a chance I could lose, and I go there and win."
Faria remains humble in victory following his flawless win, although refuses to claim that he's currently number one in the world.
"I don't want to say that [I'm the best grappler in the world]," says Faria. "I'm happy that I broke the record, I don't think anybody won the openweight class two times [in a row], so I'm happy with that."
