WNO 23: Meregali vs. Rocha features several athletes who could challenge for WNO belts soon. And some who used to be champions. Here's what to know.

The WNO season is in full swing and the highly anticipated WNO 23: Nicholas Meregali vs Vagner Rocha at 8 p.m. EST on May 10. While the second WNO event of 2024 doesn't feature any current WNO champions, it does feature several past and potential WNO champions. 

The current WNO champions in the men’s range from Featherweight to Heavyweight. Everyone in grappling knows that Gordon Ryan is the WNO Champion in the Heavyweight class, but the other titles have changed as recently as WNO 22. 

To be named the champion in one of these categories is a prestigious honor for the grapplers. The full list of past and current champions can be found at the Flo grappling WNO champions list.

WNO Featherweight Champion: Diego ‘Pato’ Oliveira

Diego Oliveira, the reigning champ in his division, has been competing since his teenage years. Currently, Oliveira proudly holds the title of IBJJF World Champion in his weight class. Oliveira also triumphed AT WNO 22 in 2024.

WNO Lightweight Champion: Diego ‘Pato’ Oliveira

Dante Leon held the title until he lost at WNO 22 in February. Oliveira moved up in weight classes and clinched the title, submitting Leon via  heel hook. Consequently, Oliveira currently holds both titles.

WNO Welterweight Champion: Mica Galvao 

Mica Galvao has held the title since late 2023, defending it earlier this year. He was set to defend it once more at WNO 23 against Tommy Langaker, but withdrew due to an injury. Additionally, Galvao secured a gold medal in the middleweight division of the IBJJF Pan Championship 2024 and at IBJJF Brasileiro last month. 

WNO Middleweight Champion: Tye Ruotolo

Tye Ruotolo won his title back in 2021 and has held onto the belt and last defended it in 2022.

WNO Light Heavyweight Champion: Pedro Marinho 

Pedro Marinho defended his championship against Rafael Lovato Jr. at WNO 21 in November of 2023. He won the belt in January 2022 when he beat Craig Jones. Marinho also faced Nicholas Meregali in 2023 in a Gi heavyweight match, 

WNO Heavyweight Champion Gordon Ryan 

Gordon Ryan is a superstar of grappling,but unfortunately due to multiple injuries he has not been able to compete as much as people would like. Ryan did defend his title in 2023 but he won't compete in 2024 until the ADCC World Championship in August.

WNO Women’s Champions

Here are the women's champions.

WNO Strawweight Champion: Mayssa Bastos

Mayssa Bastos is the current champion. By the age of 23 Bastos had won almost every single major jiu-jitsu tournament in both GI and No-GI, for most of them more than once. She recently won a gold medal in the light-featherweight division of the IBJJF Pan Championship 2024.

WNO Flyweight Champion: Ffion Davies 

Ffion Davies won the WNO Flyweight Championship at WNO: Return of Gordon Ryan in 2021. She defended the belt at WNO 19 against Jasmine Rocha. Davies is scheduled to face Morgan Black in a bantamweight submission grappling match in the co-main event of ADXC 4. 

WNO Bantamweight Champion: Bia Mesquilta

Bia Mesquilta has been around a long time in the grappling competition. Mesquilta has 10 gold medals, as of IBJJF Worlds 2021. She holds the record for the most IBJJF World Championship titles at black belt level and is a member of the IBJJF Hall of Fame.

WNO Featherweight Champion: Elisabeth Clay

Elisabeth Clay won here title at the WNO Night of Champions in 2023/ FloGrappling recently ranked her as the No. 2 female in the world for no-gi pound-for-pound athlete.

WNO Heavyweight Champions: Nathiely De Jesus

Nathiely De Jesus won her title in 2023 at WNO Night of Champions from Rafaela Guedes, who first won it in 2021.
