The search is over for Renzo Gracie's new super-fight opponent at the 2017 ADCC World Championships on September 23-24 in Espoo, Finland.
The search for Renzo Gracie's new super-fight opponent is over.
The legendary Gracie is now set to fight Sanae Kikuta, the Japanese MMA fighter and grappler who won ADCC gold in 2001, in an ADCC rules super fight. Kikuta is a judo specialist who has fought professionally for the biggest promotions in the world including PRIDE, UFC, and Pancrase.
The two fighters have a history.
In 1998, the two fought in a epic war of attrition at PRIDE 2. The fight ended after six 15-minute rounds with Gracie getting the submission. Almost 20 years later, Kikuta will have his shot at redemption.
Following the car crash and hospitalization of Matt Hughes, Renzo Gracie was left without an opponent for the ADCC super fight scheduled for September. Hughes, a former UFC champion, was involved in a serious car accident on June 16 in Illinois and has been hospitalized since. Details as to Hughes' recovery or current physical state are few, with reports that he only recently emerged from a coma.
