Leading the way was Tayane Porfirio, who won double gold (super heavyweight and absolute). She also won the double Grand Slam, winning weight and absolute gold medals at all four major IBJJF tournaments in 2017. Last year Tayane took gold in her weight and silver in the absolute.
Nathiely Jesus took gold in the medium heavyweight and silver in the absolute, beating veteran Andresa Correa of Alliance. She beat Tayane last year as a brown belt in the absolute final, but couldn't muster the same performance this time around.
Talita Alencar, brown belt light featherweight world champ in 2016, fought through a hellish blow to the face that she suffered due when Gezary Matuda attempted a flying triangle in the final. Digging deep, she scored two points in the last two minutes to beat last year's champ and win a world title in her first Worlds as a black belt.
Ana Carolina Vieira, forever known as Rodolfo's little sister, channeled the same fighting spirit the famous GF Team heavyweight was known for in the middleweight final versus 2016 champ Monique Elias. Winning a gold medal in her first year as a black belt is very impressive indeed, and it follows brown belt middleweight gold from 2016.
Claudia do Val looked close to breaking Talita Nogueira's arm in the heavyweight final. Even though she couldn't get the submission, she dominated the match and claimed her first black belt World title, following an identical result in 2016.
