This invite-only Brazilian jiu-jitsu competition begins Jan. 9, 2016, in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, with the lightweight Grand Prix.
“This season of Copa Podio promises to be its most entertaining yet, and we’re extremely excited to offer this premium event to a worldwide audience of BJJ fans,” FloSports co-founder and CEO Martin Floreani said. “We’re thrilled that Podio Ventures chose to work with us to bring more attention to this spectacular showcase of talent.”
Athletes participating in Copa Podio include black belts Leandro Lo, Gregor Gracie, Braulio Estima, Victor Estima, Edwin Najmi, AJ Sousa, Dillon Danis and Alexander Trans.
The theme this season is “Viking Invasion” due to matchups between elite-level Scandinavian fighters and the “Cabras da Peste,” a renowned group of grapplers from the northeast region of Brazil. The main bout will be between Trans, a three-time European black belt champion from Denmark, and Estima, a four-time IBJJF Gi World Champion from Brazil.
“We have assembled our most talented card of fighters for our most highly anticipated Copa Podio season ever,” Copa Podio President Jefferson Mayca said. “Partnering with FloSports to highlight this competition on FloGrappling.com will ensure that we maximize our reach among die-hard BJJ fans worldwide.”
A key storyline is the chase for the Triple Crown. Lightweight fighters who finish in the top three in their weight class are automatically classified to participate in the middleweight and heavyweight Grand Prix’s. In previous seasons, Lo, who is competing in the lightweight category for the final time Jan. 9, reached the podium in all three events to earn the Triple Crown and an extra bonus.
FloGrappling will provide live video and replays of each Grand Prix, consisting of 24 bouts, through its FloPRO subscription, which offers unfettered access to live and archived footage of top BJJ competitions, original documentaries on stars of the sport, a library of technique videos and more.
The dates and venues for the Copa Podio middleweight and heavyweight Grand Prix events will be announced in the future.
Live and On-Demand Coverage of Copa Podio Season 4 Begins Jan. 9, 2016
