IBJJF Brasileiros Championships Black Belt Live Updates - Day Two & Finals

IBJJF Brasileiros has kicked off in Sao Paulo and adult black belts take the mats today and tomorrow in one of the toughest gi tournaments of the year. Today, Sunday, will have all the men's quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals, while the women's and open class divisions will have their finals. The live blog will be updated throughout the day, so most recent results will be at the top.

Live Updates

Absolute finals are up for the men - Pessanha wins female by walkover. There's little action across the full ten minutes, it's a 0-0 decision. Pedro Alex wins the judge's decision to win the open class.

Super-heavyweight is up. After about 8 minutes with very little action, Harryson Pereira is disqualified for passivity and Henrique Betta wins. Ultra-heavy now. After about 8 minutes of no action, both are disqualified from the final. Instead now, they're having the bronze medalists fight for gold. In short order, Helder Jose snatches a straight ankle lock and gets the tap, he loses the semifinal but wins gold today!

Patrick Gaudio and Pedro Machado are up now in the heavyweight division. Machado pulls and eventually wrestles up to open up the scoring 2-0. They reset standing. Machado pulls, he's playing a lot of closed guard. Two minutes left, Gaudio pulls and manages to sweep! Everything is tied, the match will go to decision. Gaudio wins!

Medium-heavyweights are up - Gabriel Costa and Manoel Junior. Throughout the ten minutes, not much action and we go to a 0-0 decision. Gabriel Costa wins.

Middleweight final here for Mica Galvao and Jhonathan Pessanha. Pessanha pulls, Mica sits too. He kicks free of the legs, forces the turtle with a long step, and is looking at the back early! He transitions to the arm, and gets it! In only 2:03, he finishes the armbar to win another major championship.

Pedro Maia and Luiz Paulo are on the mat for the lightweight finals. Pedro pulls and works to invert under, he comes up to a rear body lock and they reset with an advantage for Maia. Pedro pulls again. 3 minutes remain. There will be no more scoring, Pedro Maia will win this on that single tiebreaker.

Kennedy Maciel looks to continue his Grand Slam run against Alex Sodre, a familiar opponent. He scores early timing the pull with a takedown. Sodre sweeps from open guard, all tied up. Kennedy working to wrestle up, and ge scores his 2 points with 3:30 left. Sodre transitions to 50/50 and is searching for any way to get up and sweep. He stands with the single but Kennedy rolls and frees himself, he will win! Kennedy Maciel has won all three IBJJF majors in 2024 at featherweight. He's trying to repeat his father's feat of the Grand Slam.

The light-feather final is on the mat, Cleber Sousa taking on Anderson Junior. Cleber pulls to closed guard and then laces up a squid guard grip to work from. They go out of bounds, reset, and now Anderson pulls. Same thing in reverse, out of bounds, reset, Cleber pulls back to squid guard. He scrambles up and takes the back late to take the win and the gold 8-0.

Thalison is out now to take on Welerson Goncalves. He gets to work quickly with his body lock passing that has been so effective for him this season. Welerson able to reset, and after some sweeps Thalison leads 4-0. They trade top position, but the gap remains the same - Thalison wins again this time 8-4.

Sabatha Lais and Thamara Ferreira won't have the medium-heavy final, Sabatha wins by walkover. Moving ahead to Mel Cueto and Amanda Magda at heavyweight, Magda pulls and will be working from closed guard. Cueto able to crack that open and work to turtle. Magda reguards. They reset and now it's Cueto pulling and sweeping to lead on points. Magda is making her comeback, but ultimately can't score before the buzzer.

Middleweight female final here, Jamile Lima and Thalyta Lima. Early takedown exchange leads them crashing out of bounds, they are both being aggressive here. Jamile pulls closed guard, but Thalyta breaks open and starts working to pass. After a near pass, Thalyta decides to pull and she leads by two advantages. Jamile is ultimately able to make up one advantage but Thalyta wins still.

It's Brianna Ste-Marie and Vitoria Vieira here in the finals and Vitoria quickly catches the guard pull with a trip - she's up 2 to start. BSM playing knee shield, she loses it for a second but recovers to closed guard. Just a few minutes left, both have penalties. BSM works back to the half guard, she is going to try to wrestle up. She doesn't get it, Vitoria is able to kick free. Vitoria gets an advantage after the sequence though - for passing to half guard earlier. BSM is able to even the score on a late takedown! However, time expires and she will be one advantage short. Vitoria Vieira wins.

Andreia Cavalcante and Maria Luiza are out for featherweight. A few minutes in while still working into the fight, Cavalcante needs medical attention for her knee. They will start again in the 50/50. They trade sweeps back and forth, and Cavalcante trails by 2 late. As the clock expires, she gets what may be a takedown out of bounds - dramatic! They will go to video review. They only award an advantage, and Maria Luiza will win Brasileiros.

Mayssa and Brenda Larissa out for a highly anticipated final at light-feather. Brenda up on the double pull, she gets the advantage. The trade sweeps and now Mayssa is back on top, leading 4-2 with six minutes left. Brenda comes back up at the five minute mark but Mayssa gets under with an inversion and scrambles up into mount! She now leads 10-4 and has blown the score open. Brenda escapes but has a lot of room to make up. She won't be able to do it, ultimately falling 14-6 in a very exciting fight.

Yara Soares has had to withdraw from both of her finals matchups today against Gabrieli Pessanha. She takes double silver, Pessanha double gold for the 12th straight time.

It's finals time! We will start with the female roosterweights, Shelby Murphey and Guilia Guimaraes. Murphey starts up an advantage after coming up on the double pull. She navigates an omoplata and 50/50 to force the turtle and pick up some advantages for a near-back take. She wins and continues an incredible rookie year - winning the Euros, Pans, and Brasileiros. In only her rookie year she's the fourth American to win Brasileiros and is on pace to be only the second ever to Grand Slam.

Patrick Gaudio, former WNO headliner, is out for his semifinal at heavyweight against Vital Neto. Neto pulls and Gaudio uses a pass to transition to the back. He locks up the choke and finishes! Into the finals against Machado. The finals are now set

The heavier weights are running through the semifinal round now. Victor Honorio punches his ticket to the ultra-heavyweight semifinals over Helder Jose with an over/under kneebar. At medium-heavy, Alex Munis is playing guard but keeps getting his foot stuck in the gi. The match goes to a 0-0 decision and his opponent Gabriel Costa of Dream Art will take it.

Mica is back out for his semifinal match. He pulls and is on the back within a minute. This is the same opponent he was unable to submit at Pans. Before the two minute mark he snatches the choke and will advance on under 5 minutes mat time. He will face Jhonathan Pessanha.

Victor Honorio, recent ADCC Trials champion, is out for his first match at ultra-heavy. Nearing the halfway mark, he scores his takedown and is in top position, before ultimately passing. He leads 7-0, and he will take the win in the quarters.

The quarterfinals at the heavier weights are rolling out. Pedro Machado takes the mat. He's using his passing to rack up a few advantages, but it's a fight marred by 3 penalties both ways. Ultimately Machado advances. Luiz Paulo is out for his semifinal against Lucas Protasio, he's had a great 2023-2024. Both men wrestling hard and securing advantages, but can't establish control for points. The fight will go to decision, and Paulo takes it. He's into the lightweight finals!

Fabyury Khrystyan, an exciting newer black belt, is out for his quarterfinal. He's up 4-0 until he gets caught up in a foot lock and has to tap. He gets up slow, favoring the same knee that he tweaked recently at ADCC Trials.

Andy Murasaki has been DQ'ed for no-show, he won't be in the bracket.

Kennedy Maciel is up now, facing Diego Sodre. Kennedy starts with a sweep that Sodre accepts, then Diego uses an early sweep and near-pass to put himself up on the scoreboard by an advantage. Kennedy ties to score, but Sodre answers back with another sweep. Whenever one guy scores his sweep, the other is able to answer back. Whoever attacks last here may win. 90 seconds, Kennedy leads, Diego wrestles up and is looking at the back. Kennedy breaks away, and Sodre must pull and reset. He can't sweep, and Kennedy wins again!

Mica Galvao has taken the mat! There's a lot of questions about his ankle injury. He answers those concerns by wasting no time in moving to a crucifix life position and securing the choke finish. Into the semifinals!

More of the lighter semifinals taking the mats now, Pedro Maia/Rolando and Anderson Junior/Kevin Alencar. Pedro scores a few advantages on Rolando but neither man able to score points or get a definitive edge on the other. Time will expire and Pedro advances.

Alex Sodre and Guilherme Fernandes are up now in the semifinals at featherweight, with Sodre leading early by advantage for a near sweep. They trade sweeps back and forth but Sodre continues to lead by a single advantage. After a sweep, Alex passes and blows the score open 9-4. Guilherme reguards, they trade sweeps, and things will end 11-6.

ADCC Trials champion Luiz Paulo starts out his day here in the lightweight, back in the gi. Ultimately, not much happens across the ten minutes and Luiz wins the 0-0 decision.

On the next mat over, Robinho takes on Rolando Samson in a matchup of athletic lightweights. Ultimately, not much happens across the ten minutes and Rolando wins the 0-0 decision.

Kennedy Maciel is out now, looking to continue his grand slam run. Lightweights are also coming out, with Pedro Maia picking up the submission to advance. Kennedy trails by a pair of advantages through the first few minutes as we take a break for some blood. Now that they're back, he's turning it up and ties the advantages before scoring 2 points to lead.

At featherweight, we have both Sodres on the mats. Double Sodre! Both are playing their signature open guard games and within minutes of each other pick up points victories to advance onto the podium. Also out at featherweight is Doederlein, who drops back on a footlock but gives up the sweep points to trail 2-0 early to Guilherme Fernandes. They trade sweeps and with 90 seconds left it's still Doederlein down by two. They reset with one minute left, Isaac has to go. He tries to chase the back but ultimately can't - he will fail to podium here and Fernandes advances!

Who will become a Brasileiros champion? The quarterfinals are now going down and the first on the mat looks to be Thalison Soares - Pan & Euros champion. He gets things started with a sweep some of the tight passing he has been displaying recently, moving quickly to the submission finish to advance here to the podium rounds.

At light-feather, all four top seeds advance, including top seeded Cleber Sousa by submission and Anderson Junior by decision. It will be Leo Mario vs Cleber and Kevin Alencar vs Anderson Junior.
